NYABJ Award

Kristen L. Pope Becomes an Award-Winning Journalist!

This moment was captured right after I accepted “Best Television Documentary,” from the New York Association of Black Journalists for my KTXS New special report on Refugee students!

Standing in a room full of living legends and aspiring student journalists lit a renewed fire in me of inspiration and deep gratitude.

Almost 2 years ago, I moved to Abilene, Texas for a year to work at KTXS News as their Education reporter. This, in the infancy of my marriage was scary, hard, and so worth it! I couldn’t have done it without my husband’s support. He was right by my side last night as always.

The story that received the honor took a month to put together. It chronicled the struggle of a refugee student struggling to pass the Texas state exam needed to graduate, because she couldn’t master the English language portion. She represents a larger group of students whose stories needed to be shared. Here’s a link to the video: http://kristenlpope.com/special-report-refugee-students.

I’m so grateful for the ability to tell people’s stories, inspire others and do what I love! I’m reminded, it’s not about me, but about people, the human experience that connects us all, and making an impact with this sacred platform.

Thank you for your support in words and spirit, along the way. The journey continues…
